October cinema is the main and only cinema of the city now. Besides the current cinema there have been operating many other cinemas in Gyumri such as “Yerevan”, “Armenia” and “Shirak”.
Cinema attendance in Gyumri was a big ceremony. People were preparing for a long time before going, they wore luxurious dresses and mostly went with the whole family. October wasn’t only a cinema. When Gyumretsies said “Ertank var”(“Let’s go to down”), they meant the surrounding area of the cinema, where people stroll till the evening.
Before the establishment of cinemas the movies were screened in the “Khoratsar” club. Those were silent movies, usually a person spinning the cinema tape explained what was happening on the screen.
October was the first cinema of the city opened in 1926(architect Gh. Sargsyan). The building was constructed in the neoclassical style.
The movies shown here were exquisite, usually attended by royal people. The premiers of many “Hayfilm” movies were held in this cinema (5-6 movies annually).
Every day 6 movies were shown in the cinema, 4-5 thousand people attended and the number of attendees reached 1 million people annually.
The 1988 earthquake destroyed the cinema, and it was rebuilt in 1996 preserving the old look.
