Old Painting School

Old Painting School

The building stands on the left of Jivani Street in the crossroad with Gayi Street. It was built during 1910s by Drampyan, rich Alexandrapol citizen. He built this house specifically as a dowry for his daughter Javahir, who was marrying Alexandrapol’s first mayor, Gegham Margar Ter-Petrosyan. The house has two floors and luxurious stairs taking from first floor to the second. This type of stairs was very rare to Alexandrapol style houses. It is made of black tuff and has open balcony on the second floor. In 1920s it was used as the main seat for the city mayor then during the Soviet rule it was confiscated and used as a school named after S. Merkurov. The building was badly damaged during the 1988 earthquake and is in need of urgent reconstruction. The Kumayri Museum Preserve suggests turning it into a painting school.
