Shirak Regional Library

Shirak Regional Library

*During the Alexandrapol times many buildings were built with local black tufa stone. When more Russians arrived in Alexandrapol they thought that the city color is too gloomy and dark and for that reason they painted the façades of some of the buildings. You can see that the best on the Achemyan street building, where Shirak regional library is located.

The Shirak regional library is located on the southern part of Achemyan 2 building.

This building was built in 1895 by Khalatyants, a famous rich person in Alexandrapol. It has a vaulted gate leading to the backyard from the eastern part. On the second floor of the western facade the building had wooden balcony. It was repaired in 2012 and you can see the new balconies while walking through the modern library of Shirak region that is located on the southern part of the building. During the Soviet rule the building was used to be a residential block, then after 1988 it served to host 2 department of Gyumri State Pedagogical University.

The first town library was founded a century ago on the basis of a private book collection. In 1924 the library received a status of a state institution. The Shirak Regional Library was formed on the basis of this state library in 1996.  In 2012 the library moved to Achemyan Street, where the repaired building of old pedagogical university hosts them till now. The building was reconstructed with the help of the Armenian Government, UNIDO and the Italian Government. Today the library is the largest one in the region and has more than 200.000 books on its stock. It serves 10,000 readers in the region with its 11 different departments.
